Negros Oriental received yesterday P117.5 million from the Department of Health as part of the rationalization plan of the European Commission.

The province is among the recipients of EC program grant for the improvement of health services and facilities.

Dr. Felix Sy, Chief of Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, said the P117.5 million will be shared with the Guihulngan District Hospital and Bayawan City District Hospital.

NOPH got the biggest share of P80 million for the continuing construction of the Central Block building. Sy said the amount can help fast-track the construction of the building which is one of the projects of late Governor Emilio Macias II.

The Guihulngan District Hospital will get P25 million, which is bigger than that of the Bayawan District Hospital of P12.5 million.

Sy said the EC identified as recipient hospitals those that require improvement of facilities.

He said Guihulngan District Hospital got a bigger share than Bayawan City District Hospital because they need more improvement in their hospital facilities. They hope that with the improvement of the facilities, district hospitals can render tertiary services.

Sy explained that a hospital to be considered on a tertiary level can conduct major operations, but it would need specialist medical doctors like surgeons, OB-gynecologists, and anesthesiologists.

Sy said he has informed the DOH of the lack of specialist medical doctors because of their very low salary grade compared to private hospitals.

He said DOH promised to look into the problem since part of the rationalization plan is also the improvement of personnel services.

The improvement of district hospitals will help decongest NOPH as patients with ordinary diseases can be treated in them, Sy said.

NOPH is now catering to at least 500 patients, which is more than its capacity of 250 only. Some of the patients come from neighboring provinces in Negros Occidental, Cebu, Dipolog and Siquijor.
