Malacañang declares August 30 a holiday

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda made the announcement on Friday morning.

The declaration was made after Malacañang reviewed Proclamation 1841 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declaring the regular holidays, special (non-working) days and special holidays for schools for the year 2010.

Arroyo had previously set the schedule for holidays this year to allow businesses to adjust schedules and promote productivity.

He said the Aquino administration is not trying to repeal the holiday economics law, which requires that most holidays, except those with religious significance, be shifted to the nearest Monday.

Gov. Emilio Macias II said yesterday that his Basta NEGOR-Education 104 program is one of the successfully implemented and completed projects of the Negros Oriental government in 2009. Macias said he is thankful to the local government units for their support through counterpart funds.  A total of 130 classrooms have been constructed in different cities and municipalities of the province.  Macias said the program aims to help the Department of Education by adding more classrooms, especially in schools with huge increases in enrollees every school year. During his school visit, Macias said, he found the lack of classrooms the top problem of schools, and he believes a well-seated and comfortable classroom can help students to focus and learn better.  Every classroom has its own comfort rooms with wash area to advocate proper hygiene. Macias said he hopes that Education Secretary Jesli Lapus will fulfill his promise to complete the teacher allocation for Negros Oriental. At present, only 100 teacher allocations have been given to the province. Macias said Lapus challenged  him to build  the  classroom  as DepEd  will  provide  the  teacher  items.

He also said he will try to follow-up the additional 30 teacher items at the office of Lapus.
