Malacañang declares August 30 a holiday

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda made the announcement on Friday morning.

The declaration was made after Malacañang reviewed Proclamation 1841 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declaring the regular holidays, special (non-working) days and special holidays for schools for the year 2010.

Arroyo had previously set the schedule for holidays this year to allow businesses to adjust schedules and promote productivity.

He said the Aquino administration is not trying to repeal the holiday economics law, which requires that most holidays, except those with religious significance, be shifted to the nearest Monday.

This year’s Buglasan Festival of Festivals in Negros Oriental that will open tomorrow (Oct. 16) promises to be spectacular than the previous years, with more contingents slated to battle it out during the Festival of Festivals Showdown. At least 12 contingents from various local government units in the Province will participate in the showdown scheduled on October 23 at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center.  Joining the event this year are contingents coming from Bayawan City, Santa Catalina, Zamboanguita, Dauin, Bacong, Dumaguete City, Sibulan, Tanjay City, Bais City, Mabinay, Jimalalud and Canlaon City. The Festival of Festivals is among the highlights of the 10-day Buglasan Festivities. The festivities which run, from October 16 to 25, will kick off with the 6th Buglasan Farm family Congress and culminate in the crowd-drawing Fireworks competition on the evening of October 25. Other events also include Lutong Garbo cookfest, Marching band Competition, Cheerdance, the Outstanding Oriental Negrense Award, and among others. Board Member Mariant Escano-Villegas, who is also the Festival Executive Director, said the over-all Buglasan Champion this year will receive P500 thousand worth of projects. The second place winner will receive P300 thousand also in the form of projects and third place over-all winner will get P200 thousand worth of projects. Villegas added the winners will be judged on a point system, that is, for every event that a local government unit participates in, it will be given a corresponding point. She said the Provincial Government appropriated two million pesos for this year’s Buglasan celebration while other funding requirements will be bankrolled by the major sponsors, sellers and corporate booths. For his part, Governor Emilio Macias II thanked all the local government units, the private sector and other stakeholders for their usual support and cooperation to what the Provincial Government is doing.

He invited the public to take time out, come, join and celebrate with the Province of Negros Oriental to this year’s Buglasan Festival. This is a good reason to celebrate considering what happened in the past few weeks with Negros Oriental being spared from the unnecessary damages brought about by typhoons. with reports from Rene Genove-Visayan Daily star
